Growing Wheatgrass, Strawberry Popcorn & Cherry Tomatoes

My Eco Sprout aims to provide the best possible Growing Guides

It's of great importance to us that every child will be able to successfully grow their own plants.

We've carefully designed picture & text guides for each of our products. Go to our YouTube channel for videos on how to plant and care for your plants.

  • Microgreen Garden

This kit should be grown indoors and can be grown all year round.

Preparing the soil:
Place the soil disc in the tray. Add 200 ml of warm water to the disc and watch it grow!
Pat down the soil to make a smooth planting bed.
Planting:
Spread the seeds evenly across the soil. Spray them down with water.
Put your Microgreen Garden in a dark space for 24 hours.
Maintaining:
Place your Microgreen Garden near a sunny window. Your seed will sprout within 2-3 days. Mist spray daily to keep the soil from drying out. Add the characters
to your garden but remove them before watering.
Harvesting:
Start cutting your Wheat Grass 6-8 days after sowing. Keep on trimming as they grow longer. They will last for +/- 2 weeks.
  • Strawberry Popcorn

Strawberry Popcorn can be grown from September-February.

Preparing the soil:
Place soil discs in a tray. Add 350 ml of warm water to the discs and watch them grow! Add the soil to your pot.
Planting:
Gently place one seed about 1.5 cm deep into the middle of your soil. Cover slightly with soil. Add your plant marker.
Maintaining:
Place your seed starter in a sunny spot on a windowsill. Your seed will sprout within 1-2 weeks. Water daily to keep the soil from drying out.
Transplanting:
Transplant the seedling into a permanent garden bed or bigger container once it is past the four-leaf stage. The other seeds can now be planted directly into the garden bed about 10-15 cm apart from one another. Plant them in a square to insure good pollination.
Harvesting:
Harvest your corn +/- 80 days after sowing. When the ears start to turn brown/ yellow you can break the ears loose from the plant. Remove the dry leaves around the corn ear and let the ears dry completely before making popcorn. The colour should be a dark maroon when dry.
How to pop your popcorn:
Let the ears dry out on the stalk. Once picked from the stalk you should wait at least another week to be sure they are dry enough.
Test your skills by putting one ear in a brown lunch sack. Fold the sack over and put it in the microwave. Wait for the exciting popping noise and remove the sack once the popping sound tapers off.
Be careful. It might still be hot!
Sprinkle some salt on your popcorn and enjoy!

  • My Sprout House

Growing Chickpeas

The Sprout House has been designed to give children a better understanding of the stages a seed goes through before growing into a mature plant.

Instructions:

  • Open the windows of the Eco House.
  • Leave 4 seeds inside the seed packet and add a few drops of water. Leave the packet open for airflow.
  • Remove the double-sided tape at the top of the Eco House and attach it to a window with bright light. The seeds will sprout within 12 hours.  So much fun!!
  • Once the roots and first leaf start to show and mature the plant in the bag will die down due to the lack of nutrients seeing that it is not planted in the ground.
  • Please discard of the Eco House at this stage by keeping to our ethos of responsible recycling.
  • Use the remainder of the seeds and sow these in the spring to grow and harvest your own Chickpeas and make delicious and healthy Hummus.
  • Do not eat the raw seeds of  a chickpea plant.
  • Health benefits: High in Vitamin A, E and minerals like Calcium, Magnesium and Iron.

 Important Notes:

  1. Be extra careful not to pull on any roots when transplanting your seedling into a permanent garden bed or a pot.
  2. Compost rich soil is the best to use when transplanting your seedlings into a garden bed. Get yours from your nearest nursery.
  3. Use potting soil when you choose to transplant your seedling into a pot.
  4. Seedlings have immature roots. Keep them moist and prevent them from drying out.
  5. Mix some bone-meal into the potting soil or compost when you transplant your seedling. This will assist the seedling's roots to develop.
  6. Insure good drainage.
  7. Use organic fertilizer and pest control.

PS. Remember to have loads of fun and keep in mind that Rome was not built in one day:) Practice makes perfect.

We would love to to see how you grow!
